Journey to the Bay of the Somme
Fort-Mahonnais and vacationers alike gather here in summer, particularly on Tuesdays and Fridays for the unmissable market. Yes, you’ve guessed it: we’re talking about the Avenue de la Plage, with its boutiques, shops, bars and restaurants. If you’re feeling a bit peckish, don’t forget to try the famous Bouchot mussels, although the rack of salt-meadow lamb is also very tempting, as is the beaten cake topped with sea buckthorn jam… a real delight… If you’re an art lover, don’t miss the Espace d’Exposition Jean Marie Boulard to admire works by local artists, drawers and photographers who will take you on a journey through the Somme and Authie bays. And if you fall in love, you can even buy your favorite painting for a small fee.

For swimming aficionados, look no further than Fort-Mahon’s central beach, just waiting for you. Sandcastles galore for the kids, who can also swim in complete safety and fly their kites in the blue skies of the Somme, now part of the newly reconstituted Hauts de France region (formerly Picardy). One of the main family activities is walking along the dunes, respecting the signs to protect nature, as well as shrimp fishing on the foreshore, not forgetting the great curiosity: observing the colony of calf seals in the Baie d’Authie.
Discover Dune du Royon et de L’Authie
From the Fort-Mahon tourist office, you’re off on a 2.5 km discovery tour of the Dune d’Authie, with numerous educational panels on the flora and fauna. A specially-designed observatory will enable you to catch a glimpse of numerous bird species, including grey herons, great crested grebes, thrushes and titmice, and even green tree frogs.
If 4 kms doesn’t scare you, you’re off, starting from the parking lot in the center of Fort-Mahon, for a superb hike along the signposted Royon trail that will take you all the way to Quend-Plage. You’ll discover the Royon dune, a sensitive and protected natural environment. Numerous signposts will give you advice on how to respect this beautiful natural environment, which must be preserved.
