Visit Saint-Valery-sur-Somme
Its share of colorful streets
Let’s discover Saint Valery sur Somme, one of the 3 ports of the Baie de Somme, along with Le Hourdel and Le Crotoy. Situated south of the mouth of the Somme in the Hauts de France region, this medieval town is also a city of art and history, with an exceptional maritime past and a rich architectural heritage.
Let’s discover this city from our campsite in the Baie de Somme where Joan of Arc and William the Conqueror are no strangers: the town’s ramparts with the William Towers, Saint Martin’s church, the quayside of the fishing and pleasure port, the town’s cobbled streets and the colorful houses of the seaside districts…

Discover the medieval city
Stroll through the old town
During your stay at our Baie de Somme campsite, discover the cultural and historical treasures of Saint Valery. On the façade of La Porte du Bas, also known as Porte de Nevers, you’ll notice the two bays of the old drawbridge.
The Porte Guillaume with its 2 11th-century towers is certainly one of the oldest remains of the medieval city. The Tour de Pierre was used as a prison and played host to Joan of Arc before she was imprisoned in Rouen’s gaols. Harold Earl of Kent was imprisoned in the Harold Tower in 1053. It was from Saint Valery in 1066 that William the Conqueror set out on his quest for England. Then came the Battle of Hasting and Harold’s defeat.
As you stroll through the narrow streets of the old fortified town, you’ll come across a converted manor house (now privately owned) that was the former château demolished during the French Revolution. The church of Saint Martin, with its checkerboard pebble walls typical of the Picardy coast, is also well worth a visit.

A stroll through the sailors’ quarter of Saint Valery sur Somme known as Le Courtgain
Walking down the flower-filled lanes to the port, between the narrow, colorful houses, you reach the sailors’ quarter, whose origins date back to the late 18th century. Admire the Baie de Somme from the Chapelle des Marins. Also, on the heights of Saint Valery sur Somme, don’t miss the Calvaire des Marins, where fishermen’s wives waited for their men to return. The statue of La Roche Madone, the patron saint of fishermen, was venerated here. Every summer, the Fête de la Mer pays tribute to sailors lost at sea. On this occasion, the facades of the houses are superbly decorated, and numerous events await you in the port.
